The pragmatic Mauricio Pochettino is selective when he signs players in the transfer market.

However, he must continue his active pre-season if Spurs want to improve on their third-place Premier League finish from last term.

Most glaringly is the need for a complimentary goal-scorer alongside star Harry Kane. The Englishman led the Premier League with 25 goals this season, while the next highest Spur, Dele Alli, netted only 10 times. The onus on Kane is unsustainable and will lead to further problems if Tottenham continues with their one-dimensional attack.

Pochettino has already signed Vincent Janssen from AZ Alkmaar, and Janssen’s 27 goals in just 34 caps shows he can alleviate some of the pressure off Kane.

The front office still has work to do, though. Pochettino needs to find another goal-scorer, add experience and provide depth to a budding midfield of young stars.

The Spurs manager has yet to make a monumental splash on the transfer market and looks unlikely to break Eric Lamela’s club record 0f a £30million signing.

So are the four players Pochettino should sign but probably won’t…

Moussa Sissoko

Sissoko made a resounding case in the EUROs as a world-class midfielder.

He was France’s top player in the side’s shocking 1-0 loss in the final, as Sissoko constantly put pressure on the Portuguese defence.

His breakneck pace and box-to-box skills would help bolster Tottenham’s talented young roster. Acquiring the Frenchman will come at a cost, however— upwards of £35million, according to Sky Sports.

Maurico Pochettino likely won’t reach that highly for the Newcastle midfielder.

Ivan Perišić

Another standout star of the EUROs, Perišić is the complementary goal-scorer that Tottenham desperately need.

Harry Kane’s 25 goals led all Premier League scorers in 2015-16. But he needs help.

Tottenham have expressed interest but haven’t pursued the talented Perisic as aggressively as they should, which will likely leave Pochettino empty-handed.

Mario Götze

Götze is likely on his way out of Bayern Munich, and Tottenham is a potential landing place for the German striker.

However, it will come at a hefty price. Acquiring the talented forward would likely break the club transfer record of £30million, and this seems like a gamble Mauricio Pochettino will likely not take.

Götze is one of the most young talented strikers in the world, and his pairing with Harry Kane would pose a dynamic attack for years to come.

Juan Mata

Jose Mourinho’s hiring effectively sealed Mata’s doom at Manchester United. The Spanish midfielder fell out of favour with Mourinho at Chelsea, and Mata will likely play for another club next season.

Tottenham would be an ideal fit. Spurs are young and inexperienced, and they need a veteran with several solid years left to help hasten the youngsters’ production.

Mata could fit in nicely with Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela as a dangerous attacker. It’s no secret that Spurs need boosting in the attacking third alongside Harry Kane. Mata provides experience and quality.
