According to Goal.com, Diego Carlos is on Liverpool’s transfer wishlist for the summer.

What’s the story?

Jurgen Klopp has effectively already said that the Reds’ business during this winter window is over after the arrival of Takumi Minamino.

Therefore, an eye will now be cast towards the end of the season, and Sevilla defender Carlos is said to be on their radar. The report adds that he has a £64m release clause, and that Real Madrid are also eyeing him, as a potential replacement for Sergio Ramos.

As they hold on to a 13-point lead at the top of the Premier League – with a game in hand to boot – it looks increasingly likely that Klopp’s men will be the champions of England come the end of the season. After winning the Champions League last term as well, some may wonder what is left for the club to achieve under the 52-year-old.

The very best, though, are always hungry for more success, and progress is always needed to improve. Even if this group of players have done fantastically well together, new recruits will be looked at to keep them at the top of the pile. They cannot afford to get complacent.

Whether Carlos is required, though, is a different matter, and certainly for such a fee. The 26-year-old has had a good season so far this term with the La Liga club, playing all 19 matches in Spain’s top tier. Los Palanganas have conceded just 18 goals, meaning they are one of just four clubs to ship less than 20 in this year’s competition to date.

However, Liverpool already have a player who is currently playing like a new signing. Before the past few weeks, Joe Gomez had to make do with a bit-part role for Klopp this season – he started just one league match until December 7th – but injuries to Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren have given him another chance at centre-back. It is an opportunity he has grabbed with both hands – the Reds have not conceded in any of the last four league matches in which he has lined up alongside Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the back four.

With Lovren to be 31 by the beginning of the next campaign, a new centre-back may be needed for back-up purposes, but at 26, it is unlikely that that role would satisfy Carlos. Liverpool have also been linked with Ben White, the 22-year-old who currently plays for Leeds United in the Championship on loan from Brighton. Given his current level, you would expect him to be far happier playing second fiddle for a while before coming into the side on a regular basis. This Brazilian, though, is not the man for Klopp.
